Are Indonesians Ready to Embrace Electric Vehicles?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more visible in Indonesia as automakers introduce eco-friendly options to address climate change. Even ride-hailing services have started offering EV rides, while the government has set its sights on achieving net zero emissions by 2060. But how ready are Indonesian consumers to make EVs part of their everyday lives?

According to our Future in Flux study, 15% of Indonesians currently express interest in electric vehicles. Interestingly, residents in Bodetabek show slightly more enthusiasm for EV adoption compared to other areas. While the figure remains modest, it’s worth noting that EVs are still a relatively new trend in Indonesia. For now, using public transportation emerges as the more favored choice of commuting for combating climate change among Indonesian consumers, with 37% of respondents preferring it. Over time, as the market matures and awareness grows, the popularity of EVs is expected to rise.

Using electric vehicles are just one part of the bigger picture of how Indonesians are responding to climate change. How concerned are they about this global issue? Does climate change influence their choices when purchasing products or supporting brands? And what are their everyday efforts in coping with this pressing challenge?
